Flight routes are established by statutory decree in Germany. An important part of this procedure is the assessment of aircraft noise. For this purpose an impairment function is used. It links the calculated aircraft noise exposure with dose-response-curves. For different flight routes the value of the impairment function is determined. From the acoustical point of view that flight route should be chosen which has a minimal impairment function. The designed flight route system should be evaluated in practice. For this monitoring procedure the noise exposure is calculated on the basis of the actual air traffic. Then the number of persons affected by aircraft noise is determined and compared with that calculated during the flight route planning. Within the scope of monitoring the calculated results are also compared with the results of noise-monitoring systems installed at most German airports. On the basis of these analyses noise abatement routes can be developed and a long-term noise control can be carried out. The results are presented in form of a traffic light criterion. This criterion easily indicates need for action for the reduction of aircraft noise. Furthermore, it enables a continuous improvement on the course of the routes.
