Basic Research on Operational Troubles for Ships and Harbours Due to Abnormal Water Levels

It is very important to know the ebbs and flows of tides from thernviewpoint of ship operations. However, abnormal water levels arernbeing widely observed. These conditions cause various challengesrnamong waterfront facilities. In this study, the present situations andrnchallenges to ship operations in abnormal water levels due to tides are researched. A nationwide questionnaire was conducted to learn fromrnoperators of ships and harbours. The results of the questionnairernindicated that there are many difficulties related to operations as ships are berthing, maneuvering in shallow waters, and loading andrnunloading passengers and cargo. However, there are no effectivernmeasures with which to counter these difficulties. These problems arernparticularly serious for water-buses that navigate the rivers. In thisrnstudy, the current problems are statistically analyzed based uponrncomments received from operators.
