A physical and computational model for hte three dimensional numerical simulation of the formation of macrosegregation due to thermosolutal convection during hte solidification of multicomponent steel castings is described. The model considers simultaneous conservation of mass, momentum, energy, and chemical species, together with a simplified model of multicomponent microsegregation. First, simulation results for the solidification of a rectangular box shaped casting with a riser are compared with experimetnal measurements. Then, simulation resutls for complex shaped steel castings are presented, to show the application of the model and solution procedure to the simulation of the solidificationof industrially produced steel castings.
