The Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) at Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India is actually building the Tokamak SST1, which is the biggest plant of this type in South East Asia. The commissioning of this plant will start middle of year 2001. To cool down the superconducting magnet, wound from a cable-in-conduit conductors, the following power at 4.5 K is required: 1. 400 W refrigeration power plus 250 W for cold circulator, 2. 200 l/h liquefaction rate for the current leads. For this purpose, AIR LIQUIDE has designed a fully automatic, liquid nitrogen pre-cooled plant. Its cold end allows a great flexibility to fulfil completely IPR requirements, including the 35 tons magnet cool down, the transient heat loads, supercritical or two-phase flow operation, and the quench process management for poloiedal and toroidal circuits. The thermodynamic cycle and the main components are described.
