Land-atmosphere interactions play a critical role inrndetermining the diurnal evolution of both planetaryrnboundary layer (PBL) and land surface temperature andrnmoisture states. The strength of coupling between thernland surface and PBL in numerical weather predictionrnand climate models remains largely unexplored andrnundiagnosed due to the complex interactions andrnfeedbacks present across a range of scales. In this study,rna framework for diagnosing local land-atmosphererncoupling (LoCo) at the process-level is presented usingrna coupled mesoscale model with a suite of PBL and landrnsurface model (LSM) options along with observationsrnfrom the U. S. Southern Great Plains. Specifically, thernWeather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model hasrnbeen coupled to NASA's Land Information Systemrn(LIS), which provides a flexible and high-resolutionrnrepresentation and initialization of land surface physicsrnand states. Coupling diagnostics based on the evolutionrnof near-surface temperature and humidity are examinedrnalong with the sensitivity of a range of PBL-LSMrncombinations to perturbations in soil moisture.rnUltimately, this work provides a testbed to study factorsrncontrolling LoCo using the LIS-WRF system, in anrneffort to develop and evaluate coupling diagnosticsrnwithin the community.
