Stream processing, widely used in communications andrndigital signal processing applications, requires highthroughputrndata processing that is achieved in most casesrnusing Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) designs.rnLack of programmability is an issue especiallyrnin space applications, which use on-board componentsrnwith long life-cycles requiring applications updates. Tornthis end, the High Performance Data Processor (HPDP)rnarchitecture integrates an array of coarse-grained reconfigurablernelements to provide both flexible and efficientrncomputational power suitable for stream-based data processingrnapplications in space. In this work the capabilitiesrnof the HPDP architecture are demonstrated withrnthe implementation of a real-time image processing algorithmrnfor space debris detection in a space-based spacernsurveillance system. The implementation challenges andrnalternatives are described making trade-offs to improvernperformance at the expense of negligible degradation ofrndetection accuracy. The proposed implementation usesrnover 99% of the available computational resources. Performancernestimations based on simulations show that thernHPDP can amply match the application requirements.
