Eighteen materials from parts used outside the passenger compartment of two motor vehicles were tested according to FMVSS 302. All samples passed the test although the FMVSS 302 test requirements do not apply to exterior materials. The same materials were also tested in the Cone Calorimeter at three heat fluxes. This paper describes a method for using the Cone Calorimeter to predict FMVSS 302 performance. The method is based on Lyon's analysis to predict the UL 94 V and HB classification from Cone Calorimeter data. Flame propagation in the FMVSS 302 test is unlikely if the peak heat release rate in the Cone Calorimeter at a heat flux of 35 kW/m~2 does not exceed 240 kW/m~2. Furthermore, a material is expected to meet the FMVSS 302 test requirements if the peak heat release rate in the Cone Calorimeter at 35 kW/m~2 does not exceed 12 times the ignition time at 35 kW/m~2 in seconds.
