Erosion control with soil-cement: streambank and channels

Soil cement w as studied extensively in the early 1950's by the Bureau of reclamation for the protection of the upstream slopes of earthen dams. The knowledge gained from the s uccess of soil-cement in protecting dam embankments from erosion due to wave action was transferred to the river and stream environment in the early 1970's. The city of Tucson, Arizona, started using soil-cement extensively along reaches of several rivers and washes starting in the late 1970's. The effectiveness of soil-cement was demonstrated during two extreme flood events in 1983 and 1993 in the Tucson area.
