Restorationof fish and wildlife habitat along eroding streambanks has experienced a great renaissance due to the rediscovery of bioengineering practices. These practices been tested and proven over a variety of sites throughout the country. Most state USDA, Natural Resource conservation Service technical standards and specifications for streambank and protection include structural practices and a few bioengineering practices that have worked well in that state. The Arkansas state office has develop a technical note to supplement its standard and specifications to include all bioengineering practices and a selection matrix to select practices based on site conditions and desired benefits. The matrix has separate sections for toe protection, slope stabilization, and upland restoration. Within each section, practices may be selected based on velocity, depth to bedrock, summer misture longevity, maintenance, and wildlife benefits. The atrix provides a user friendly guide to put the bioengineering practices in a prescription mode as the structural practices have been.
