The improvement of both the indoor lightingrnenvironment and thermal environment usingrnarchitectural techniques without the use ofrnelectric energy should be considered inrntoday’s environmentally conscious world.rnFrom this perspective, an architecturalrndevice employed on the windows andrnrooftops of buildings may be effective.rnIn this study, measurements werernconducted to find the possibility of improvingrnboth the lighting and the thermalrnenvironment of an existing building byrninstalling a window sun shade in windowrnand green roof.rnThe installation of a sun shade does notrndecrease the indoor brightness nor causesrnany sense being surrounded. Moreover,rnextensive watering for the maintenance ofrnthe green roof is not necessary. Also, therndegradation of the building frame from thernhumidity of the green roof is absent. Basedrnon these conditions, we considered thernpossibility of installing a sun shade andrngreen roof for improving the lighting andrnthermal environments in existing buildings.rnSpecifically, results of measurementsrnconducted in a test room of an existingrnbuilding and an experiment in a darkroomrnsuggest that installation of the sunshade isrneffective improving the lighting environment.rnShielding of heat by the green roof was alsornnotably effective. On the other hand, thernheat shielding effect of the louvers was poor.
