This paper discusses recent efforts torndevelop an intelligent front end (IFE) for arnbuilding energy simulation model using arnreadily available expert system shell.rnCurrently a number of dependable energyrnsimulation models exist for the energyrnassessment of buildings. However, use ofrnthese simulation models involves one problemrnwith respect to the data input process.rnUsually, detailed building energy simulationrnmodels require somewhat rigorous inputrninformation from users regardless of therndesign stage or application domain. Thus,rnutilizing databases and rulebases properlyrndeveloped for intelligent input process, anrnIFE can be designed to interface between thernuser and a detailed building energyrnsimulation model.rnWith this IFE approach, energyrnsimulation models will be more easilyrnaccessible by building designers to testrntheir design hypotheses during preliminaryrndesign stage. This also minimizes therninvolvement of the energy specialist atrnevery stage of energy simulation. This studyrnconstitutes one step toward the developmentrnof integrated computer-aided building designrn(CABD) system, for which there is currentlyrnmuch effort being made by many differentrnresearch sectors.
