This paper summarizes the approach, method, and somernresults of an ongoing systematic study in simulation andrnevaluation of daylight factor distribution in rooms. The study aimsrnto develop the basis for both critical investigation of simplifiedrndaylighting design guidelines and flexible fast responserncomputational modules, which would enhance the CAAD systemsrntowards preliminary design supporting lighting performancernsimulation.rnGiven the format restrictions of most commercially availablernlighting simulation software packages, the study was based on arnspecially developed and therefore adaptable simulation programrn(MB-3C) on the basis of the three component procedure. Therninput data can include the geometry of the room, position and sizernof the apertures, relevant photometric material properties, as wellrnas data concerning possible obstructions. The simulation canrnpotentially be based on different sky luminance distributions.rnAs a significant example for common preliminary designrnrequirements, the aperture/floor area ratios were considered. Therndistribution of daylight factors were generated for a significantrnnumber of "virtual" rooms with different attributes (geometry,rnlocation and shape of openings, etc.) creating an extended datarnbase for further stat stical assessment. The results were analyzedrnwith regard to their relevance for evaluation of existing andrnformulation of new daylight related design guidelines (tools, rules,rnrequirements, etc.). Available empirical data concerning therninhabitants' response to the visual environment were taken intornconsideration in order to study the occupational relevance andrnconsequences of the research findings.
