An optimization module is developed and incorporatedrnwithin EnergyPlus. As an application of thernoptimization module, improved controls are determinedrnfor building passive thermal energy storage inventory.rnThe paper describes the implementation of thernoptimization module within EnergyPlus. Moreover, thernpaper presents results of a comparative analysis tornassess the performance of various optimizationrnalgorithms evaluated as part of the implementation ofrnthe internal optimization module within EnergyPlus.rnParametric analyses are carried out to evaluate therneffectiveness of the optimization module integratedrnwith EnergyPlus in harnessing the building thermalrnmass to reduce either energy use or peak-demandrnassociated with cooling a prototypical office buildingrnunder various operating conditions. Selected results ofrnthe parametric analyses are presented in this paper. Inrnparticular, the performance of the internal optimizationrnmodule is compared against that of GenOpt, an externalrnoptimization system. The study reveals that the Nelder-rnMead simplex method provides an appropriaterncompromise between computational efficiency,rnrobustness, and accuracy of the optimal solution.
