We have developed software applications that designrnHVAC systems (that is, select, locate, and sizerncomponents and their interconnections) givenrnbuilding descriptions, user preferences, and built-inrnrules. When this capability is combined with otherrnkey application characteristics (graphic interface,rninteractive recalculation, full integration, selfcontainedrnreference data, strict retention of userrnmodifications, and automatic parts selection), thernresult is a powerful assistant that greatly increasesrnuser productivity and design quality.rnOur application structure is a framework for iterativernimprovements in design and analysis algorithms andrnthe addition of optimization techniques. We see thisrntype of software ultimately replacing most designrnfunctions now performed by people.
