With incorporation of gold nanorods (AuNR) into the shape memory polymer (SMP) matrix, the present study developed and demonstrated the SMP nanocomposites capable of remote triggering by low-power laser. The SMP nanocomposite film fabricated with the commercially available polyurethane based SMP polymer (EG-72D) and very low concentration of gold nanorods (~ 0. lwt%) manifested fast response to the low power (~10mW) laser. The highly efficient photothermal conversion of gold nanorods promises their great potential in developing fast response SMPs that can be triggered remotely by visible lasers. Furthermore, using the simultaneous micro-focused small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering technique we investigated the structure-property relationship of EG-72D/AuNR nanocomposite.
