The output pulse broadening and enhancement factor with polarization mode dispersion

We analytically calculate the relation between the initial root-mean-square pulse-width and the output average broadening caused by PMD in optical fiber systems. The optimum of the input pulse-width corresponding to the minimal output broadening is derived. In particular, the normalized output bit rates and the PMD enhancement factor are obtained.
