With the aim to extend the service life of MgO-C bricks used for vanadium-extraction converters, the effect of Fe addition on the physical and mechanical properties of this refractory was investigated.The results showed that the poor service life of MgO-C bricks was caused by the poor erosion influenced by the oxidized layer due to the poor sinterability,whereas the oxidized layer of MgO-Fe-C bricks was well sintered by the oxidation of Fe phase.The static and rotating slag corrosion tests showed that there was not difference in species of the slag permeating into the bricks.The significant improvement of slag corrosion resistance was due to the promotion of the sinterability and modification of the microstructure.It is considered that MgO-Fe-C brick is a favorable substitute of MgO-C refractory to be used as linings of vanadium-extraction converters.
