The main characteristics of the polarimetric response ofrnrice fields at C-band have been identified by analysing arnset of Radarsat-2 images in Seville, Spain. The evolutionsrnof different polarimetric observables as a functionrnof phenology can be explained in terms of the scatteringrnmechanisms present in the fields during the cultivationrncycle. Based on that sensitivity to phenology, a simplernretrieval approach is proposed. This algorithm is basedrnon just three polarimetric observables and provides estimatesrnfrom a set of four relevant intervals of phenologicalrnstages. The validation against ground data, carriedrnout at parcel level, produces 96 % of coincidence. Thisrninversion is carried out by exploiting a single satellite acquisition,rnwithout any other auxiliary information.
