Influence of Melt Pouring Velocity on Casting Characteristics of ZM5 Magnesium Alloy

Base on the method of numerical simulation of casting process, the mold filling and solidification process ofrnliquid ZM 5 magnesium alloy was investigated at pouring velocities of 0.3m/s,1m/s,10m/s respectively with constant pouringrntemperature, in comparison with that of A356 aluminium alloy. The conclusions obtained are: Under the three given pouringrnvelocity, there is a clear time shift between the filling process and the solidification process of A356 aluminium alloy, and therncasting characteristics of ZM 5 magnesium alloy differ from that of aluminium alloy; Under the pouring velocities of 0.3m/srnand 1m/s, ZM 5 magnesium alloy starts to solidify earlier in spite of higher superheating and the filling process is overlappedrnwith the solidification process,this benefits the sequential solidification by melt pouring and shrinkage compensation. At thernpouring velocity of 10m/s, the casting characteristics of ZM 5 magnesium alloy are similar to those of aluminium alloy.
