RE-VISITING THE MICHAEL LEDFORD FIRE INCIDENT

On October 10th, 1999, a fire occurred in Stuarts Draft, Virginia, which resulted in the death of Zachary Ledford, a one-year-old infant, and injuries to his mother, Elise Ledford. At the time of the fire, Michael Ledford, Zachary's father and Elise's husband, was not home as he had left the residence to run some errands. The fire was contained to the area surrounding an upholstered chair in the living room of their 2-bedroom apartment. An initial investigation report indicated that the fire was of an undetermined cause. Multiple pieces of information were memorialized during the investigation, including witness descriptions of the fire, as well as descriptions of the time Mr. Ledford left the residence. There also was a phone call from Mrs. Ledford during the fire which places a time stamp on her incapacitation.
