Amplified Geochemical Imaging technologyrn(Anderson, 2006) was utilized to geochemicallyrnsample shallow sea bottom cores for the presence ofrnhydrocarbons at nanogram (10~(-9)) levels.rnTo date, this technology has been tested andrnsuccessfully used on fresh core material (Abramsrnand Dahdah, 2011), but it had not been attemptedrnon archived material.rnTo that end, an extensive archive of ocean seabedrncore samples existed for the east coast of Canada,rncollected over a period from 1965 to the present.rnThe cores are stored at the Geological Survey ofrnCanada at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography inrnDartmouth, Nova Scotia.rn170 cores were selected by Nalcor Energy Oil andrnGas as a pilot program to perform geochemicalrnsampling from selected areas off the coast ofrnNewfoundland and Labrador. The objective was torndetermine if there are indications of petroleumrnhydrocarbons on any of the cores.rnThe cores selected for study were selected fromrnsealed and refrigerated material collected over thernlast 11 years on the assumption that these were thernmost likely cores to retain significant geochemicalrnsignatures. Results from this pilot study arernencouraging, prompting Nalcor Energy Oil and Gasrnto expand the study into other areas, and investigaternthe use of older core material.
