The purpose of this paper is to present three photometric quantitative analyses that are used in the production of ethylene dichloride (EDC) and vinyl chloride. Approximately 75% of the EDC produced is used for the production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM).rnThe use of on-line photometers increases the efficiency of the EDC production process. For example, the monitoring of moisture in EDC liquid avoids corrosion problems that can lead to damage of the reactor and a costly shutdown of the process. Applications covering the use of ultraviolet (UV), near infrared (NIR) and fundamental IR photometers will be discussed.
