The shelf-life of a rocket motor igniter based on boron and potassium nitrate wasrnthermally investigated. Chemical and thermal analysis was used to find a possible ageingrnreaction for this redox system. It was not possible to verify ageing reactions of this redox systemrnalready published in literature. A new ageing reaction was postulated and verified byrnexperiments. The time, which was necessary for an accelerated ageing at a temperature of 60℃rnto simulate a storage time at 10℃ of 7.5 and 15 years respectively, could be calculated by usingrna kinetic model.rnThe igniters were artificially aged and then fired. The performance parameters of thesernartificial aged igniters were determined.rnAccording to the model used the investigation showed that in the case of not changingrnstorage conditions it is possible to use these rocket motor igniters without any problem forrnanother 15 years.
