Traditional studies on production planning of continuous process industries used MILP orrnMINLP formulations based on simplified unit process models which lead to the gap between planningrnresults and production practices. Moreover, there is no eyes turned on sustainability, but focuses onrnenterprise economic benefits only. In this paper, a hierarchical approach that consists of such two levels asrnthe strategic level (or planning level) and the tactical level (or unit process optimization level) is proposedrnfor sustainable production planning of continuous process industries. At the strategic level, goalrnprogramming (GP), combined with the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), is utilized to formulate thernplanning model basing on simplified unit process models to give the approximate tasks and constraints forrnunit processes. At the tactical level, rigorous models are utilized to simulate and optimize unit processes,rnand provide more fitful unit process models for the strategic level. The application of this approach to arnpetrochemical complex illustrates that it is a satisfying approach for sustainable production planning ofrncontinuous process industries.
