By aiming at its hydraulic system, this paper research the method of tamping machine fault diagnosis based on fuzzy inference. Firstly, to divide the entire hydraulic system into several subsystems, take the slewing system for instance, to analyse its possible faults and the reasons of each fault phenomenon according to experts' experience. Secondly, use the theory of fuzzy inference, nearness degree and the principle closeness to analyse and calculate systematically, then according to the value of nearness degree, to arrange the model of the fuzzy faults and get the diagnosis result. At last, a hardware frame for online monitoring and fault diagnosis of the tamping machine's slewing hydraulic system is established and an example chart is given to show the results.
