This paper analyses the performance of different on-line task allocation strategies on FPGAs in three system scenarios: an underused device, a device used in balanced conditions and an overloaded device. We will show that a simple approach based on the division of the FPGA into partitions, which requires a low complexity algorithm, is more efficient than a classical First Fit approach and as effective as other complex approaches if the number of partitions chosen is suitable for the type of workload being executed. A simple but effective model is used to determine the adequate number of partitions for different workload profiles as well as the simulation of different system scenarios in which the efficiency of different heuristics are compared.
