1.The World Today I would like to set the scene by citing Professor John Holdren of Harvard J. F. K. School for Government from his lecture at the MillenniuM Sustainability Transition Conference of the Academies of Sciences of the world in Tokyo, May 2000.Professor Holdren is Science Advisor to U. S. President Obama. "World population has exceeded 6. 0 billion that can roughly be divided into three classes: ? The Rich (0.8 billion)? The Transitional (1.2 billion), and ? The Poor (4.0 billion). Based on the criterion of GDP in US$ per capita (Purchasing Power Parity corrected): ? <4,000 ? 4000-16,000, and ? >16,000 respectiv ely. The Rich have nine times the wealth, eight times the energy consumption and eight times the carbon emission of the Poor.
