The effect and mechanism of integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland on nitrogen removal were studied. The TN and NH/-N removal of the system were 67.1% and 98.9% respectively. The concentration of NH/-n decreased along the direction of the water in the system while the concentration of NO3-N increased. The nitrification acted better than the denitrification although both of them were active. In one operation periods, the effluent concentration of TN was decreased along with the operation time. The resumption of nitrification of the system needed one day at least. The TN removal of the second half of the system was negative because of the accumulation of NO3--N. The stimulation of denitrification was significant to nitrogen removal in the constructed wetland.
