This paper analyses the requirement of Collaborative Product Development ( CPD ) on knowledge share and reuse, and the advantages of Ontologies on knowledge management; then presents domestic and foreign research work concerned. Based on the analysis, the paper introduces Ontology Engineering (OE) into the domain of CPD, proposes a new idea of using ontology model of domain knowledge to support CPD, and constructs its theoretical and applied framework. The supporting capabilities with which OE provides CPD have been studied in the paper from three aspects: ontology A) act as an interactive medium with information keep correspondence among designers and/or agents; B) act as a neutral format of file enable the heterogeneous agents carry out interoperation and/or data exchange; and C) act as a formal concept model of a product can be transformed into other ones such as solid model. At last, a segment of the CPD-focused ontologies base represented by UML static model is diplayed.
