Structure and Properties of Cotton Fiber Oxidized with Sodium Periodate

Partial oxidation can lead to a variety of polymers having functional groups, such as aldehyde and carboxyl groups. In this paper, the structure of cotton fibres before and after sodium periodate treatment were investigated by the methods such as Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was found that the new peak at around 1730cm<'-1> due to the stretching vibration of the C=O double bond of the aldehyde group appeared and the intensity of the peak enhanced with the increasing concentration of oxidant. The weight of the cotton fibres decreased during the oxidation treatment and longitudinal stripes appeared on the surface of cotton fibre. The crystallinity of cotton increased slightly when oxidized in lower oxidant concentration, and then decreased gradually with the oxidant concentration increasing. The breaking strength of cotton yarns decreased to different extent at different level of oxidation, while that breaking elongation showed different change law. The results obtained suggest information for the developing functional cellulosic materials.
