Polymers play an important role in the telecommunications industry and are thus at the center of numerous research activities at Bell Labs. I will discuss two specific examples demonstrating the scope of the research projects, from the scientifically driven to the more applied. The follwoing topics will be covered: polymeric materials for organic electronics (thin film transistors, organic light emitting diodes) and non-lithographic approaches to micropatterning using rubbery stamps and molds. In each of these examples I wil highlight the accomplishments, challenges, and future directions.
