In the event of a loss of coolant accident in a CANDU (CANadianDeuterium Uranium) reactor the primary heat transport pumps, whichcirculate coolant though the reactor, have to operate for at least 15minutes in two phase conditions. This capability has to bedemonstrated by tests on full size pump-motor sets.During the two phase tests the pump-motor sets are exposed to highlevels of vibration, shaft runout and pressure pulsations.Tests have been carried out in two different test loops with pumpsfrom different suppliers.This paper reviews the results of these tests and provides anexplanation for the observed differences. Recommendations for futuretests are also presented.
