The density of Dy-atoms is measured in a YAG HID-lamp by means of a broadband absorption technique using a UHP-lamp as a quasi-continuous back-light source in combination with emission spectroscopy. The population density of the atomic ground state of Dy is determined by an analysis of the absorption profile of a Dy-resonance-line and of an excited state by a measurement of the emission coefficient of an optical thin Dy-line. By a combination of both the plasma temperature is deduced. Therefore, measurements at Hg-lines become unnecessary which will be important for diagnostics at Hg-free HID-lamps. The phase resolved densities are used to analyse the emitter effect of Dy on the electrodes.
