A Study of the Development and Utilization of the Multi-purpose Pipeline Corridors in Beijing

The rapidly developing urban construction in Beijing has posed higher and higherrequirements for the intensive utilization of urban transport, environment, landscapes andland. Multi-purpose pipeline corridor has become an important means that large Chinese andforeign cities exploit to rationally utilize urbanconstruction space in important urban functionalareas to solve the adverse effect caused on environment, transport and landscapes by the construction of municipal pipelines. Since it built thefirst multi-purpose pipeline corridor in 1959, Beijing has been making active explorations inthis regard in the subsequent 50 years.The article looks back at the construction history of multi-purpose pipeline corridors in Beijing, sums up the problems existing in thecourse, analyzes the necessity of the corridorconstruction, introduces the areas ideal for theconstruction of such corridors in light of the layout of the urban functional areas of the city andpresents modes of construction.
