A hydrothermal oxidation (HTO) plant utilizing a transpiring wall reactor design for processing shipboardrnorganic wastes has been tested. The plant is designed to destroy common naval vessel excess hazardous materialsrn(EHM) at a nominal waste feed rate of 45 kg/hr. Corrosive wastes including a chlorinated solvent, chlorinated/fluorinatedrnsynthetic oil and a salt producing photographic solution simulant have been processed at feed ratesrnbetween 45-95 kg/hr. Tests have been conducted at a nominal operating pressure of 24.1 MPa with internal reactorrntemperatures between 594 and 816℃. The process oxidant is compressed air. Total organic carbon destructionrnremoval efficiencies of better than 99.99% have been obtained for all validation tests. Measurements of NOX andrnCO concentrations are normally below 25 ppm and 100 ppm, respectively. Liquid effluent total organic carbonrn(TOC) levels are consistently below 3.5 ppm. Post-test inspections have not revealed any obvious reactor liner corrosionrnor salt deposition concerns.
