The performance of the current navy blackwater incinerator was analyzed from two parallel and coordinatedrnprograms to develop strategies for adapting it to future waste treatment needs. A team consisting of the Naval AirrnWarfare Center at China Lake and Energy and Environmental Research Corporation fabricated and tested a mockuprnof the blackwater incinerator under idealized conditions, including the use of simulated blackwater. These testsrnfocused on measuring baseline performance parameters and correlating these with measurable incinerator operatingrncharacteristics. A separate team at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division has conducted arnseries of diagnostic and performance tests on vacuum-collected blackwater obtained from a U.S. Coast Guard shiprnusing an incinerator identical in design to those currently in service on many U.S. Navy ships.rnThe data show that for some waste compositions, increases in wastewater solids content will push CO emissionsrnover the regulatory limit. However, analyses of the data from these investigations have identified a probablernmechanism to account for the increased emissions. Through a combination of numerical modeling and directedrnexperimental effort, modifications in operating and system envelope are being explored to address these issues.
