Optimal control of pressure surges in pipe networks by valve operations involves transfer of the system from an initial steady-state to a final steady-state in a specified time without any residual transients at the end of valve operations with controlled pressure variations. In this paper, a methodology based on optimisation techniques has been developed for the optimal control of pressure surges. An objective function which minimises the pressure change in the system and transfers the system to a final steady-state smoothly is devleoped and optimised using principles of calculus of variations to get optimal valve operations.
