A Global Perspective on Environmental and Legislative Changes to Raw Materials and How They are Affecting NDT Penetrants and Precleaners Compositions and Their Performance
NDT penetrants (PT, MT) and pre-cleaner compositions have remained essentially unchanged for many years as the materials used to produce them were effective, readily available and cost effective. Environmental and legislative concerns including REACH, TSCA, DSL, AICS, ENCS have restricted the availability of some raw materials due to concerns with respect to the environment and human safety. Both mandated and voluntary restrictions on materials such as Nonyl Phenol Ethoxyl-ates, Borates, Chromic Acid, and Phosphates have resulted in, and will continue to have an influence on the formulation of many standard products in the Aerospace industry. As products change their composition, there needs to be a re-certification according industry and end user specifications, this can place a big strain on current resources and needs to be taken into consideration when contemplating changes. This paper will look at historical and current products and take a look to the future reviewing what NDT penetrants and pre-cleaners may look like.
