Power quality monitoring is evolving, from discrete short-term measurements at customers' request to a system-wide continuous monitoring for performance benchmarking or power quality baseline establishment. Recently, developments on PQ monitoring are heading towards the development of PQ index and PQ predictive maintenance. Over the past few years, the installed power quality monitoring systems have increased significantly all over the world. In line with the worldwide trend on monitoring, CLP Power is developing a system-wide power quality monitoring system, based on previous monitoring know-how and overseas' experience. Being a power utility in Hong Kong, we are aware of the rising expectation from customers on power quality and therefore establishing several new approaches to deal with this. Joint voltage sag immunity study with equipment manufacturer, communication seminar with customer and system-wide power quality monitoring are some of the examples. To improve the quality of supply, utilities must have to know how the system performs. Therefore, establishing a system-wide power quality monitoring is indispensable. This paper will discuss the strategy, design considerations and share our experience in this project.
