Apparent rate constants of the reaction between zinc oxide and hydrogen sulfide have been calculated for microfibrous entrapped sorbents (MFE), packed beds and a composite bed by using bed depth service time equation at different reaction conditions. The higher space velocity will accelerate mass transfer kinetics. Under the same reaction conditions, MFE has the fastest apparent reaction rate, which is 10 times larger than that of ZnO extraduates. MFE can be used as polishing layer in a composite bed design to enhance the overall apparent reaction rate by a factor of 10, and therefore increases the capacity of a packed bed 2~3 times depending on the breakthrough concentration. Also the addition of 2 vol.% water reduced apparent reaction rate by 26%.
