This work describes new electrolyte mixtures that were tested for low temperature performance in Li-ion cells. The emphasis of this testing was on charging at low temperatures where lithium plating and charging at high rates often limit performance. It was found that PC based electrolytes do not improve low temperature performance capabilities under the conditions tested. However, addition of low viscosity solvents such as methyl acetate (MA) and 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) to the cells after formation allows the cells to accept charge at higher rates. Impedance spectroscopy was also used to examine the cell with different solvents and with temperature change.
