Due to the increasing electricity demand, the termination of import/export contracts and the shut-down of old generation capacity Switzerland is facing a potential shortage of electricity supply within the next decade. In order to cope with this shortage one option being discussed is to build up additional domestic generation capacity on the order of 1-2 GW_e. Because of the possibility of fast-track installation and the high efficiency potential of gas turbine combined cycle plants this power generation technology is considered a prime candidate to fill the predicted gap in electricity supply. As Switzerland's actual power generation base is virtually CO_2-free (nuclear: 40%/hydro: 55%) specific attention is being paid to the point that any replacement or addition to the generation base needs to meet stringent CO_2 emission limits. For this reason a technology development program ("Kraftwerk 2020") has been put in place which aims at providing the technologies needed for highest electric efficiency (62%), biomass co-fired (20%) natural gas combined cycle plants. A development path has been outlined which technologies need to be developed to achieve these goals. In a concerted effort specific CO_2 emission (kg CO_2/MWh_e) will be reduced by various measures comprising increased plant efficiency, biomass co-firing and - ultimately also - CO_2 capture & storage.
