Three types of technology approach to reduce CO_2 are introduced.rnThe first is an improvement of the thermal efficiency using USC (Ultra Super Critical) boilerrntechnology. IHI currently construct a USC Pulverized Coal boiler with a 620degC steam temperature.rnThe plant is located in Yokohama, Japan, and will start its commercial operation in June 2009. IHIrnhave also commenced investigations to the next step 700degC, with further advanced efficiency.rnThe second is to use a renewable fuel in a CFB (Circulating Fluidized Bed) boiler. IHI-CFB boilersrnare currently available to fire various kinds of fuels and achieve steam temperatures of 569 deg C,rnwhen firing corrosive waste as fuel.rnThe third approach is to recover CO_2 from a Thermal Power Plant using Oxy-fuel combustionrntechnology. IHI are a member of a Japanese-Australian consortium which was established in 2004,rnspecifically for the purpose of conducting a detailed feasibility study for the application of oxy-fuelrncombustion in an existing power plant. Based on the feasibility study results, a project is now underrnway to apply oxy-fuel combustion to an existing plant for demonstration purposes.
