Capacity increase, fuel price development, aging of installed fleet, market deregulation andrnenvironmental commitments are driving the investment decisions of nearly all Europeanrnutilities. Therefore it is important to know all capabilities of existing steam power plantsrnbefore deciding about new plants and upgrading of existing plants. ALSTOM Power Servicerndeveloped methods to analyze total steam power plants with regard to increase of powerrnoutput, efficiency increase, improvement of availability, maintenance cost reduction andrnreduction of emissions, especially of CO2. These methods – ECO|RAM and CO2Cut – arernalready used in several projects with very different boundary conditions. In all cases thernplants were very well maintained and operated and improvement needs were not obvious. Itrnwas necessary to combine the operation and maintenance knowledge of the owner/operatorrnand the design, maintenance and operation knowledge for all main components and systemsrnof ALSTOM Power Service to jointly detect further improvement possibilities. Sensitivityrnanalysis helps to understand the influence of different market scenarios on the ranking of thernevaluated improvement potentials. Both methods are designed to separate the promisingrnideas/potentials in an early stage and concentrate the evaluation process on these potentials.rnIn all projects improvement potentials were detected and several of these have been implemented already successfully. ECO|RAM delivers an investment plan showing costs,rnearnings, technical description and schedule for each potential; CO2Cut provides a cataloguernof measures to reduce CO2 emissions. This catalogue is organized according to conventionalrneconomic decision criteria and the trading value of CO2-certificates. The references show thatrnboth methods can be used for all sizes of steam power plants regardless if they are used forrnelectricity production only or as CHP.
