Over the past two decades, the electric power industry'srninvolvement in power Distribution Automation (DA) hasrnbeen principally focused on remote monitoring andrncontrol of the distribution systems and their equipments.rnAdvance in metering and communications have meantrnthat electric power utilities worldwide are increasinglyrnadopting the two way communications control andrnmonitoring technology of electric power distributionrnsystem to provide better and more efficient services tornelectric consumers. In order to establish communicationrnbetween the consumer, electricity meter and the utility,rnseveral technologies are possible; telephone network,rnradio frequency or Power Line Carrier (PLC). In therncontext of the PLC presents competitive advantages; asrncompared to the radio systems and others, the networkrnmedium does defacto exist. This paper presents therndevelopment of an online energy monitoring system viarnPLC in Malaysian environment, its features and benefits.rnThe system consists of data acquisition, communicationrnprotocol and processing within energy meter and hostrncentral station.
