While deregulation progresses on the European market, quality of supply is an issue of growing importance in the electricity networks. Grid connected electricity storage systems (ESS) are able to enhance the quality of supply by e.g.: 1. Hindering blackout periods, 2. Shifting the energy produced in excess for use during high demand periods, 3. Sustaining the grid for better power quality. The present paper describes first the concerns related to a large penetration of renewable energy resources in the electricity networks. Then, the "non-storage-based" solutions currently implemented are presented together with the current European projects related to the issue of "quality of supply in electricity networks". Finally, this paper shows the potential applications of storage in the future electricity networks, it compares the technical and economical performances of different storage technologies in the quoted applications before presenting the projections of development in the next 5 to 10 years.
