Effect of Nd Addition on P/M Titanium Alloys

The microstructure and mechanical properties of PM Ti alloys doped with a rare earth element were investigated in this work. Results have shown that the addition of a rare earth element improved the tensile strength and elongation of PM Ti alloy. The alloy containing 0.8wt% Nd has a tensile strength of 1080MPa and an elongation of 14%. The above mechanical properties were almost the same to wrought material, while the processing cost dropped. The effect of Nd has been studied by SEM and TEM. The contribution of rare earth element to the mechanical properties is that the rare earth element could scavenge oxygen from the powder surface, purifying the particle interface. The decrease of the oxygen content of Ti substrate along with the existence of Nd oxides improved the mechanical properties of PM Ti alloy.
