Challenging Prediction of the Abrasion/Erosion/Resistance of some Hard Composite Materials

At present there are produced several hard materials for tools, e.g. diamond tools for drilling, cutting or grinding of the rocks, marble and ceramics and also for many other parts for application in very severe wear service condition. However, such materials must possess, first of all, high resistance at abrasive wear and even at erosion produced by the worked opposite material. These materials are often characterized only through their hardness. The paper presents an operative methodology - based on a new own conceived apparatus - for testing the abrasion/erosion behavior of the materials with high wear resistance due to their increased hardness. Among these materials, for several kinds of abrasive tools, and important class is represented by the metal - tungsten carbide matrices for diamond tools, whose designing, processing and especially properties are also briefly presented. A quasilinear increasing of the wear resistance with the hardness of the studied materials and a relationship to determine the predicted life were established.
