In many demanding cold work applications such as powder pressing and blanking there is often a need for a very good ductility in combination with a good wear resistance and high compressive strength. One way to increase the ductility of a cold work tool steel is to minimize the carbide content and utilize the most effective carbide types with respect to wear resistance and ductility when designing the tool steel. An optimized PM produced cold work tool steel has been developed with an outstanding combination of resistance to chipping and wear. This has been achieved by an optimization of both the chemical composition and the process route, giving a minimum of initiation sites for fracture. The ductility, wear resistance and machinability of the new steel are presented together with some industrial application tests.
