Dry drilling of mineral materials like granite, sandstone, concrete or plaster provides many advantages for the environment and the user of drilling machines. Worth mentioning are the cost reduction and waste avoidance of the coolant, the possibility for working in occupied buildings without pollution and on building sites without coolant supply. The graphitization tendency of diamond at temperatures above 500℃ requires the cooling of the diamond tool during the drilling process. For dry drilling an alternative prevention method has to be created. The Institute of Material Engineering of the University of Dortmund develops new special structures of diamond-metal-composites to prevent the graphitization. Several materials, for example ZrO_2, Al_2O_3, glass, or systematically created pores, are inserted in the structure as thermal insulation. The powder metallurgy process for the production of these new structures and their characteristics are the subject of fundamental investigations. The optimization of these special diamond-metal-composites will be the basis for a new generation of industrial diamond-drilling-tools in the future.
